Moriarty Returns to Life Word on the Week 18th January 2025.
Moriarty was a criminal mastermind who used his intelligence and resources to provide criminals with crime strategies and sometimes protection from the law, all in exchange for a fee or a cut of the profits. This was the name of Sherlock Holmes’ fictional character. It is also the name of an Irish Tribunal which has been dormant for over the last 14 years.
The emergence of Michael Lowry as leader of the recently elected Independent politicians has revived Moriarty as Lowry was one of the leading characters. In his capacity as Minister of Communication he had the task of overseeing the awarding of the second Mobile Licence. This very desirable article was bid for by Esat and a number of EU telephone companies.
According to the Tribunal, Lowry ‘secured the winning’ of the competition for the licence which was awarded to the local man Denis O’Brien’s Esat Digifone.
The findings of the Moriarty tribunal that he “not only influenced, but delivered, the result” of the supposedly independent competition for the State’s second mobile phone licence; that he engaged in a “cynical and venal abuse of office”; and that his conduct in relation to a rental property owned by Ben Dunne was “profoundly corrupt to a degree that was nothing short of breath-taking” – all of this is, as far as Lowry is concerned, cruel calumny against a blameless man.
Certainly a majority of his constituents would have no trouble with his reputation as he has topped the poll in the last three elections! In Tipperary his popularity is built largely on the way he is able to procure things from Government and get things done.
Recently the Garda have sent the Tribunal file to the Director of Public Prosecutions to see if there is a case to be made against Lowry. It is 29 years since the Mobile Licence was put to tender. We patiently await its outcome!
In addition to the charges against him Lowry has never shown any remorse for his conduct. Count Moriarty, in the Sherlock Holmes story was plunging to his death over the Reichenbach Falls but miraculously saved by clinging onto a branch of a tree; the question is will Lowry be given a branch from the DPP?
Remember no amount of good constituency work can offset the sin in a life. To enter the Kingdom, you need to repent of all sin and trust in the efficacy of Christ’s death for sinners to give us a new life (1 Peter 2 verse 24). It applies by faith to Lowry, you and me. It is God’s way into His Kingdom.
